THAILAND came out successful in retaining their title as champion and won the third edition of the Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy for ASEAN Youth Football Championship in a dramatic finale which had to be decided in penalty shoot outs. Thailand won with 5-4 score line.

His Royal Highness Crown Prince Pengiran Muda Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah consented to award the trophy and medals to the winner and medals to the runner-up.

Thailand’s victory was more sweet as they received the Fair Play award and bagged $20,000 cash prize as the champion, while Myanmar received $10,000 as runner-up.

However, Myanmar’s team deserved praises as their young players were not easily distracted and managed to draw with Thailand despite playing with only 10 men. However, they were unlucky as their last player did not manage to convert the penalty shoot out, leaving Thailand to win 5-4.

“I would like to extend my gratitutde to the government of Brunei Darussalam for successfully organising this championship which promotes ASEAN’s youth football and the level of ASEAN’s football,” said Myanmar’s team captain, U Maung Win.

He said Myanmar is most grateful with the invitation to participate in this championship for the third time even though their team’s fate is not on their side yet (as champion).

Meanwhile Thailand’s coach, Kawin Kachendecha said he was relieved that their team came out as champion. He also admitted that this year’s championship is more challenging but he was proud with his players who managed to overcome the challenge posed by the opponents.

Myanmar's Team captain - U Maung Win

The Myanmar football team would like to extend its gratitude to the government of His Majesty The Sultan for the invitation to participate in this biannual championship.

The team’s leader also said that their initial achievement started with being second runner-up, followed by being first runner-up two years ago and again at the same position this year.

“My players tried very hard and their best but were unlucky for penalty,”

“This tournament is very successful and it promotes our friendship between our ASEAN countries and promotes the football level of ASEAN country,”

U Seo Myint Lwin: Myanmar Manager

“We can beat them but the problem for our players are very simple, they were playing with tactics and this was what happened to our team in 1961, the same with Israel, they play with tactics,”

“In penalty shot, we have chances but were unlucky, but actually this player is a very good scorer but unlucky, the ball missed by that time,”

He also stated his appreciation with the competition and its management as well as the people of Brunei.

He also said that he is ready at any time should he is invited to come and play in another competition in Brunei again, and in good humor, he said “I will come back to Brunei and teach Brunei to beat Thailand,”.

Interview with Thailand’s manager

The Thailand’s team manager, in a post match conference said that they only had nine days to train before they arrived in Bandar Seri Begawan.

On Myanmar 's team

He stated that the game shown by Myanmar was good in terms of tactics and in good condition compared to their team who lack physical advantages.

He also admitted that the Thai players used tactics against the Myanmar players.

On Thailand’s team

He said that a few of their players were sent for the AFC championship in India. What is important is however, he said, giving priority and cooperation in a team and participated by players who are in good condition and have good tactics.

“The victory we earned tonight is a good achievement for us where we have won two times in a row. Ten of our players had played in the Asian youth football championship in India,” he said.

For the future, he said Thailand will try their best to retain the championship for the third time.
